Israel has detained a senior aide to Prime Minister Eliyahu Feldstein on suspicion of passing on classified information. The leak could have affected negotiations on the release of hostages in the Gaza Strip.

Police in Israel have detained a senior aide to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu until November 7 on suspicion of passing classified information to foreign media.  This was reported by CNN, according to UNN.

Opposition leaders claim that the intelligence in question was “falsified.” It is claimed that they were part of a plan to derail a ceasefire and hostage release agreement in the Gaza Strip.

The alleged leak was the basis of two articles published in September, one in the Jewish Chronicle in the UK and the other in Germany's Bild. Both were written with references to sources in Israeli intelligence and supported the narrative that Netanyahu was promoting at the time.

These articles were published during the ceasefire and hostage negotiations, and while thousands of Israelis demonstrated almost daily, calling on the government to reach a deal with Hamas and bring Israeli hostages home.

According to court documents cited by CNN, one of the suspects in the case is Eliezer Feldstein, who has long worked in the Israeli Defense Forces press service. In December 2022, he became Netanyahu's assistant to work with military commanders.

The newspaper notes that Netanyahu's spokesman denied that the leaks came from the prime minister's office and said that “the person in question was never involved in security-related discussions,” likely referring to Feldstein. The office also downplayed the possibility that the leak had affected negotiations with Hamas over the release of hostages from Gaza, calling the claim “ridiculous.
