Iceland holds early parliamentary elections due to the collapse of the coalition

After the collapse of the previous ruling coalition, early elections are being held in Iceland today. Almost 270,000 eligible voters can take part in the voting. Partial results are expected gradually in different parts of the country overnight.

Iceland is experiencing significant political changes. The ruling coalition is in disintegration. Today, Iceland will elect a new parliament ahead of schedule, - we are talking about 63 seats. Almost 270,000 eligible voters, more than one in ten of them, checked the box before the actual election day. For all others, the polling stations will be open until 22 hours today (local time). 

There were no forecasts immediately after the polls closed, but partial results from different parts of the country are expected to be released gradually overnight. Preliminary final results are expected to be announced on Sunday morning, German time.

The next general election in Iceland was scheduled to take place only at the end of summer 2025. However, disagreements in prime minister Bjarni Benediktsson's three-party coalition led to the collapse of the government in mid-October, after which President Halla Tomasdottir prematurely dissolved parliament at the request of the head of government.
