There are 18 Crimean journalists illegally imprisoned by Russia  .

This was stated by the first deputy chairman of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people, dissident and former political prisoner Nariman Dzhelial during a speech at the second  international conference “Crimea Global. Understanding Ukraine through the South”, reports UNN.

Dzhelial emphasized that free journalism in Crimea has been destroyed.

Citizen journalists, mostly Crimean Tatars, who have taken the place of professional media workers are subjected to repression. There are 18 illegally imprisoned Crimean journalists behind bars. Lawyers defending political prisoners are also unprotected

- Dzhelial noted.

In addition, he said how many Crimean political prisoners need immediate medical care.

According to the estimates of our human rights activists, 60 Crimean political prisoners need immediate medical care, although everyone has medical problems. Officially, 218 Crimean political prisoners, including 132 Crimean Tatars, have been recognized by human rights defenders, and this is only official data

- Jelal said.

AddendumAddendum

In June of this year, Narimana Dzhelal was returned from Russian captivity.

In the occupied Crimea, repressions against local residents, including Crimean Tatars, continue, and problems with infrastructure and basic needs are growing.
