EU reaffirms its commitment to meet Ukraine's urgent defense needs

The EU reaffirmed its readiness to meet Ukraine's urgent military needs, including providing one million pieces of artillery ammunition and strengthening Ukraine's defense capabilities through a €5 billion assistance fund.

The European Union  has reaffirmed its determination to meet Ukraine's urgent military and defense needs, including the supply of ammunition and missiles, in particular in view of its commitment to provide one million artillery rounds. This is stated in a joint press release following the 9th meeting of the EU-Ukraine Association Council, UNN reports with reference to the Government Portal.

"The Association Council welcomed the establishment of the Assistance Fund for Ukraine, a €5 billion package under the European Peace Facility that will provide Ukraine with both lethal and non-lethal military equipment and training," the press release said.

It is noted that further increases of the corresponding level may be envisaged until 2027.

"The EU reaffirmed its determination to meet Ukraine's urgent military and defense needs (including the supply of ammunition and missiles, in particular in view of the commitment to provide Ukraine with one million artillery rounds) and its commitment to strengthening Ukraine's ability to defend its independence, territorial integrity and sovereignty," the press release said.

Ukraine expressed gratitude to the initiatives of EU member states and partner countries for supporting the timely procurement and immediate delivery of artillery ammunition to Ukraine.

In addition, the Association Council emphasized the strategic importance of strengthening the European defense industrial base and cooperation with the Ukrainian defense industry, cooperation that should be in line with the modalities to be agreed upon and take into account the security and defense interests of all member states.

"Ukraine welcomed the successful implementation of the EU Military Assistance Mission in support of Ukraine (EUMAM), including the new goal of training 20,000 more Ukrainian soldiers," the press release said.

Ukraine hopes to provide soldiers with enough combat ammunition starting in April.
