Could not be a breakthrough for membership: political scientists summarize the results and point out the successes of the NATO summit for Ukraine

The NATO summit in Washington could not have been a breakthrough for Ukraine's membership in the Alliance. But better coordination among NATO members in helping Ukraine will mean more help. This opinion was expressed by the founder of the Institute of American Studies Vladyslav Faraponov in a commentary to a journalist of UNN.

In fact, this means that there will be more coordination between the states themselves in terms of security cooperation with Ukraine. I think this is very beneficial for Ukraine, given that its security and defense needs are only growing. It's hard to say anything more substantive yet

- said Faraponov, commenting on the signing of the Ukraine Compact.

He noted that the NATO summit could not have been a breakthrough for Ukraine's membership.

"But better coordination among NATO members themselves in helping Ukraine will mean more assistance. It was hard to expect anything else from the NATO summit this time," Faraponov said.

Commenting on the results of the NATO Summit, Oleksandr Kraev, an expert at the Foreign Policy Council "Ukrainian Prism", noted that Ukraine did have some successes.

First, it is a political recognition of the fact that Ukraine will be in NATO. This is an inevitable political reality, this is what will happen. The very fact of such recognition is very necessary for us, very correct, and from the point of view of Western diplomacy, it confirms the fact that Russia will not win. In the West, our partners are still convinced that one of the reasons for Russia's war against Ukraine is that Ukraine wanted to join NATO

- Kraev said.

According to him, fixing Ukraine's irreversible path to full Euro-Atlantic integration, including NATO membership, is important for Ukraine.

"Now that the NATO powers have recorded that Ukraine will join NATO under any circumstances, one way or another, that this moment will come, it is a record that neither Russia with its imperial desires nor China with its desires for so-called balancing will win. That there will be a victory for the West and ultimately for Ukraine. The very fact of this fixation is very important for us," Kraev said.

The political scientist also commented on the basic funding of 40 billion euros in 2025.

Thus, at the NATO summit in Washington, DC, a decision was announced on long-term support for Ukraine in the face of Russian aggression. The Allies intend to provide a minimum core funding of 40 billion euros over the next year.

Regarding the 40 billion euro fund. Of course, there are questions about the fact that this 40 billion will not be new money, it will be a combination of all the money that is allocated under bilateral agreements, plus the funds that will be missing to make up this amount. This is, of course, a disadvantage that it will not be an additional fund, which we would still need, but it is great that this process is fixed. Even if a state fails to give us the necessary amount of money, equipment, and ammunition within a certain period of time, other NATO states will be able to support this initiative within this fund, and Ukraine will still receive the weapons and materials it needs. Therefore, this is a positive thing for us

- Kraev said.

In addition, the political scientist commented on the signing of the Ukraine Compact.

"As for the Ukraine Compact, it is essentially what I said, only expressed in a normally enshrined document, which is also even broader than NATO itself, because the Japanese and some other EU countries have joined it," the political scientist said.
