Today, on the tenth anniversary of the downing of Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 over Ukraine, which killed 298 people, Oleksandr Ruvin, Director of Kyiv Scientific Research Institute of Forensic Expertise, in a commentary to UNN, reminded how the experts managed to prove that Russia was involved in this crime.

According to him, the investigation into the causes of the disaster has become an international task involving experts from different countries. Much of the research into the disaster was conducted in Ukraine.

"During the investigation of the Pavlohrad crash, an arena test was conducted to simulate a similar explosion that occurred on the MH17 flight. Experts and all participants in the workflow prepared a model of the cockpit and elements of the target environment were placed at two separate test sites. At the same location, the experts installed and set up photo and video equipment and 3D scanning of objects," Ruvin said.

The Director of the Kyiv Scientific Research Institute of Forensic Expertise explained that in the course of the experiment, the specialists set themselves a number of tasks, in particular, to visualize the impact of the warhead and missile explosion on the aircraft body, to confirm or refute the location of the aircraft and missile at the time of its detonation determined by calculation methods, to determine the area of the warhead and missile impactors, the number and density of their coverage of the modeled cockpit, to study changes in the flight path of impactors after they meet the aircraft body, to determine the degree of deformation of impactors, etc.

"The data obtained from the experiment was used to clarify the launch location and trajectory of the missile that shot down the Boeing 777. Among the secondary aspects investigated were: the nature of the blast wave, the detection of traces of explosives and damage similar to that found on the aircraft. According to the conclusions of the international investigation team, MH17 was shot down by a surface-to-air missile from a Buk anti-aircraft missile system belonging to the 53rd anti-aircraft missile brigade of the Russian Federation Armed Forces," added Mr. Ruvin.
