More than 30% of food products tested in Ukraine contain excessive amounts of industrially produced trans fats, which increase the risk of death from cardiovascular disease.

Consumption of industrially produced trans fats in excess of the norm increases the risk of death from cardiovascular disease. Meanwhile, in more than 30% of the products tested during the study from supermarkets and catering establishments, the amount of trans fats exceeds the permissible value established by regulations.  This was reported by the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, UNN reports.

Details

According to WHO research, consumption of more than 2.2 grams of industrially produced trans fats per day reportedly increases the risk of dying from cardiovascular disease by 20-32%.

Last year, the WHO FEEDCities project was launched in Ukraine to study the urban food environment and assess the content of trans fats, sodium, and potassium in the most common foods consumed by Ukrainians.  Lviv became the pilot city.

There, 120 samples of products were taken from supermarkets and catering establishments. Their composition was analyzed in detail.

As it turned out, more than 30% of the tested products contained trans fats in excess of the permissible value established by the regulatory acts.

According to the Ministry of Health, among street foods, TLC is most common in pizza, panini, donuts, falafel, croissants, and cakes; among store-bought foods, it is found in cakes, cookies, dairy-based desserts, ice cream, frozen foods, margarine, cheese, and processed meat.
