At around 03:00, unknown assailants blew up a branch of Santander Bank in Berlin's Zehlendorf neighborhood. The criminals reportedly blew up an ATM to steal money. But the explosion was so powerful that it destroyed the entire bank branch. The window of a neighboring storefront was also shattered. Local residents woke up to the noise.
Witnesses said that there were two robbers. They took the cash, some of which was left on the sidewalk among the debris. Police searched for the criminals in Zehlendorf, including by helicopter, but were unsuccessful.
In Schönefeld near Hamburg, at 03:07 at night, ATMs at two branches of Sparkasse Bank were blown up. The branches suffered considerable damage. The perpetrators are being sought.
