Ukraine plans to reform the district heating sector to improve energy security. This is reported by the Ministry of Community Development, Territories and Infrastructure of Ukraine, UNN reports.
Details
The Ministry of Infrastructure and the USAID Energy Security Project (ESP) signed a Memorandum of Understanding aimed at restoring, reforming and developing the energy and municipal infrastructure of communities, ensuring energy sustainability, including, in particular, the development of distributed energy generation with integrated cogeneration, the use of renewable energy and biofuels, and the modernization of district heating.
Reforming the energy sector in accordance with the best practices of the European Union, optimizing the municipal heating system of Ukraine, promoting the large-scale implementation of decentralized energy supply, integrating various sources of renewable energy, and improving energy efficiency will contribute to the decarbonization of the energy system and increase Ukraine's energy security
USAID, through the Energy Security Project, will support the Ministry in reforming the district heating and energy sectors.
It will promote energy resilience by prioritizing energy infrastructure project concepts at the municipal level aimed at economically feasible and financially sustainable distributed energy generation with integrated cogeneration, and promoting the introduction of diverse energy sources.
The agency emphasized that an important element is to promote the development of cogeneration, which will reduce the number of potential power outages in emergency situations. It will also ensure a constant supply of energy to critical infrastructure in communities.
Appendix
The Memorandum envisages both cooperation in addressing priority needs and assistance in strategic planning for the restoration and reform of the energy and heat supply sectors. It also envisages raising public awareness of the relevant reforms and legislation that will be developed and implemented within the framework of cooperation.
As a reminder,
445 heat supply facilities have been restored in Ukraine . These are boiler houses, central heating stations, and thermal power plants. It was also possible to restore almost 1.9 GW of generating capacity.
