Slovakia is ready to support negotiations on Ukraine's membership in the EU, Slovak Foreign Minister Juraj Blanar said on the eve of the EU summit

Slovakia is ready to support the opening of negotiations with Ukraine on membership in the European Union, which will be discussed at the EU summit later this week. This was announced by Slovak Foreign Minister Juraj Blanar following a meeting of the EU Foreign Affairs Council on December 11, UNN reports.

After assessing the reform efforts in Kyiv, we are ready to support the opening of accession negotiations, which will be the content of the future European Council. However, our eastern neighbor still has a long and thorny path ahead of it, so that all the necessary measures are not only adopted, but also implemented and respected,

Blanar said, as quoted by the Slovak Foreign Ministry.

The head of Slovak diplomacy is quoted as adding that "it is necessary to focus more on finding peaceful solutions and to engage in the restoration of Ukraine, which should bring the country closer to membership in the Union."

He also spoke about Slovakia's military support for Ukraine.

"I reiterated that we will not provide military support at the governmental level, but we will continue to help Ukraine humanitarian, including demining and preparing the energy infrastructure for winter, where we have already taken concrete steps," the head of Slovak diplomacy said.

To recap,

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban recently demanded that the EU summit in December should not take any decisions on the start of membership negotiations with Ukraine and changes to the budget, which include 50 billion euros for economic support for Ukraine.

Orban, who has maintained ties with Moscow even though the EU has imposed sanctions on Russia over its war in Ukraine, is at odds with the European Commission, according to Reuters.
