Ukrainian volunteer Margarita Kharenko from Melitopol was sentenced to 20 years in prison by the occupation authorities of the russian federation under the article "extremism and terrorism". This was reported by the National Resistance Center, UNN reports.
Details
Ukrainian volunteers are victims of brutal repression by the occupation authorities.
One of the most famous cases of this phenomenon is the imprisonment of Margarita Kharenko from Melitopol.
On January 9, 2023, russian security forces abducted the Ukrainian Volunteer Service member from her home, and on April 4, 2024, the Southern District Military Court in rostov announced a verdict on charges under Article 282 of the russian Criminal Code on "extremism and terrorism." As a result, Kharenko was sentenced to 20 years in prison.
In turn, the Ukrainian Volunteer Service expressed its outrage at this unprecedented verdict and declared Kharenko's imprisonment illegal. The statement emphasizes that the woman was arrested and convicted for supporting Ukraine and active volunteer work in the temporarily occupied territory without the right to adequate protection.
We can suspect how trials of Ukrainian citizens are conducted in russia. This is a phenomenon devoid of justice and humanism. This is another public crime against Ukrainian citizens, our freedom, language and the right to active citizenship
This case is just one of the many violations of human rights and international law that occur on the occupied territories.
