A powerful tornado has wreaked havoc in Guangdong province in southeastern China. According to the Chinese state news agency Xinhua, 5 people were killed and 33 others were injured as a result of the storm, UNN reports .

A tornado struck Zhongluotang City in Baiyun County at around 3 p.m. local time on Saturday. A weather station in Liangtian Village, about 2.8 kilometers from the tornado's origin, recorded a maximum wind gust of 20.6 meters per second.
According to preliminary estimates, the tornado had the third level of intensity (the highest is the fifth) and traveled about one kilometer on the ground.
As of 22:00 local time, search and rescue operations at the site of the tragedy were largely completed. Authorities reported that 141 industrial buildings were damaged, while residential buildings were not significantly damaged.
