Poland has challenged the Mercosur agreement in the EU Court of Justice citing procedural violations. Warsaw demands the suspension of the document and a review of its legality.

Poland has filed a complaint with the EU Court of Justice regarding the agreement between the European Union and the South American countries (MERCOSUR), challenging the legality of the decisions by the EU Council and the European Commission to approve it.  A Polish diplomat in Brussels informed RMF24 about this, UNN reports.

Details

According to the diplomat, a motion for interim measures—the suspension of the agreement's provisional application—was attached to the complaint.

In addition to the main complaint, Poland joined the European Parliament's request to verify the agreement's compliance with EU law.

As noted, Poland insists that the agreement was split into political and trade parts in violation of procedures, and believes that key decisions should have been made by the EU Council rather than the European Commission.

Recall

The trade agreement between the EU and Mercosur entered into provisional force on May 1. It covers 720 million people and provides for the abolition of tariffs worth billions.
