The Russian occupation authorities issue warrants for the apartments of Mariupol residents who left the city because of the war. Housing whose owners do not show up on time with documents is transferred as “compensation” to other residents.

Residents of Mariupol who lost their homes in 2022 as a result of Russian aggression began to be issued warrants for "ownerless apartments," UNN  reports, citing the Mariupol City Council .

Details

Residents who lost their homes in 2022 due to Russian shelling began to receive warrants for so-called "ownerless apartments". These are the apartments of Mariupol residents who left the city due to the blockade and occupation and are now unable to return.

This was stated by the pseudo-mayor of the city, Oleh Morgun. According to the information, the apartments whose owners do not appear within the required timeframe with supporting documents are transferred to the occupation authorities. After that, the housing is transferred as compensation.

This is due to the fact that the occupiers destroyed almost 50% of the city's housing stock, and for more than two years have been building only commercial housing for sale through mortgages.

This decision contradicts all legal norms and will never be recognized by any international law. We will restore justice for Mariupol and its people. We are already working in this direction under the Mariupol Justice initiative. I urge Mariupol residents not to fall for such provocations and manipulations. There is a war going on, no civilized legal norms are in force in the occupied territory and there is no guarantee of protection of your rights

- Mayor of Mariupol Vadym Boychenko.

Recall

Earlier, UNN wrote that Russian occupants are forcing residents of destroyed Mariupol to return to the city to preserve their right to the surviving housing. If the owners do not confirm their rights, the property will be confiscated.
