Since 2009, the UN has been celebrating the International Day of Nelson Mandela, a famous politician, public figure and fighter against apartheid, who was born on July 18, 1918, in the family of a member of the Temba Royal Council.

At birth, Mandela was given the name Rolihlahla. At school, his missionary teachers began calling him Nelson, in honor of the prominent English admiral Horatio Nelson.

After Mandela left the presidency in 1999, he was active in public life.

He died on December 5, 2013 at the age of 96.
