The assumption that Hamas would disarm looked like a significant concession from the militants, who officially seek to destroy Israel. But it is unlikely that Israel is considering such a scenario.
Israel vowed to defeat Hamas after the deadly attacks on October 7. Its current leadership is strongly opposed to the creation of a Palestinian state on the land captured by Israel in the 1967 Middle East war.
