A leak of approximately 25 tons of water containing radioactive substances occurred in the building of the second unit of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant in northeastern Japan. Before that, an abnormal decrease in the water level was noticed in one of the water control tanks in the nuclear fuel cooling pool. A robot was launched in the building, and it turned out that the water that had leaked from the tank had run into the basement.
TEPCO denies any problems with cooling the spent nuclear fuel, despite the fact that no water is entering the pool. The temperature in the pool rises to a maximum of 46 ° C (below the maximum reference value of 65 ° C). Within a week, the building will be re-opened to allow robots to locate the leak.
In February, TEPCO reported that a radioactive water leak was detected at Fukushima Daiichi. The leakage area was approximately 4 by 4 meters and the volume was 5.5 tons. In August last year, TEPCO began discharging water from the plant into the ocean.
