Austria has extended free travel on its highways until September 30, 2024, and border insurance, provided that there is no green card. Written by UNN with reference Oeamtc.

Details

On Austrian highways and expressways, vehicles transporting humanitarian aid, as well as private cars with Ukrainian license plates, are exempt from paying tolls until September 30, 2024. This applies to all types of tolls, including vignettes and truck tolls.

Regarding insurance, green card holders can apply directly to their insurance company for accident claims. Other persons must take out border insurance. Vehicles with Ukrainian license plates used by displaced persons from Ukraine can be used in Austria for one year without registration in Austria, but this period is reset every time you leave the country and starts again when you return. If you have your main place of residence in Austria, you can voluntarily register your vehicle in this country, but you need to fulfill all legal requirements and provide the necessary documents. There are no special rules to simplify the process without these conditions.

After registering in Austria, the vehicle owner must also pay the NoVA tax, which is a standard consumption tax, and an insurance tax depending on the type of engine. The current EU regulation 2022/1280 stipulates that from July 27, 2022, it is no longer necessary to exchange Ukrainian driving licenses for those of an EU country (in our case, for an Austrian driving license).Ukrainians under temporary protection can use their national driving licenses without having to exchange them for EU licenses or pass new exams. If a Ukrainian driver's license is lost or stolen, EU countries can issue a new license, provided that the Ukrainian authorities confirm that the person has a valid license and can prove their physical and mental fitness. Modern Ukrainian driver's licenses, which began to be issued in 2005, are in the format of plastic cards and are similar to EU driver's licenses, including the classes of license.

According to EU rules, no international authorization or translation is required to use such certificates. The responsibility for conducting repeated technical inspections of vehicles lies with the country of registration, including Ukraine. The country of registration is also responsible for enforcing the technical inspection rules and may impose sanctions for violations. Therefore, there should be no problems in Austria due to the overdue technical inspection of Ukrainian cars. Road safety and the technical condition of vehicles in Austria are ensured through spontaneous roadside inspections.
