The Brovary City Council has sent an appeal to the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine regarding the inexpediency of changing the name of the city to Brovary, adopted at an extraordinary session. This was reported by Brovary Mayor Ihor Sapozhko, UNN reports.
The mayor of Brovary reminded that at an extraordinary session of the city council held on July 11, the vast majority of deputies supported the position of their voters and decided that it was inexpedient to rename the city.
"Yesterday, at an extraordinary session, members of the city council made many important decisions. Among them, they expressed their position on the intention to rename the city of Brovary. Out of 27 deputies present at the session meeting, 24 supported the appeal to the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine regarding the inexpediency of renaming the city of Brovary. Today, a duly executed appeal has been sent to the Verkhovna Rada. We once again emphasize the need to listen to the expert opinion of scientists and historians, as well as to take into account the position of the community. The final word is for the Verkhovna Rada," Ihor Sapozhko said on his Telegram channel.
Recall
At an extraordinary session, members of the Brovary City Council almost unanimously decided to support the initiative to preserve the name of the city of Brovary and to appeal to the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine with a petition to preserve the name of the city of Brovary, taking into account scientific and historical research.
The resolution to rename Brovary to Brovari was previously registered by a group of MPs led by Roman Lozynskyi, a representative of the Golos faction.
Commenting on the city council's decision, Brovary Mayor Ihor Sapozhko noted that there are three conclusions of scientific institutions of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine that the name "Brovary" is historical and should be preserved.
He added that by voting at an extraordinary session, the deputies confirmed the position of the majority of Brovary residents who oppose changing the city's name.
"Given that the initiative to rename the city has been repeatedly considered by the relevant committee of the Verkhovna Rada, and that we have repeatedly appealed with certain justifications, the deputies today decided to adopt the relevant decision of the local government and appeal to the Verkhovna Rada to keep the historical name of Brovary.
In my opinion, taking into account independent polls, with today's vote, when 24 deputies supported the appeal to the Verkhovna Rada, we clearly expressed the opinion of the residents that the city should be called Brovary," said Ihor Sapozhko in an exclusive commentary to UNN.

The Association of Ukrainian Cities statedthat decisions to change the names of settlements must necessarily be made with the opinion of the community in mind. The relevant committee of the Verkhovna Rada should contact the relevant local government body to obtain the community's position. And then take this position into account when preparing a decision on possible renaming.
