US with dozens of allies plans first conference on AI use: will define 'responsible' use

The U.S. State Department will hold the first meeting of the signatories of the agreement on artificial intelligence (AI), which will discuss the issues of its military application. This is reported by UNN with reference to Fox News.

This week, the U.S. State Department will host the first meeting of artificial intelligence (AI) signatories, focusing on military applications as the first object of international interest.

Context

In 2023, the U.S. agreed with 53 countries on a Political Declaration on the Responsible Military Use of Artificial Intelligence.  Several notable countries did not join in. Among those who have ignored are indicated: China, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Brazil, Israel, and India.  As for those countries that supported the declaration, it is said that 42 countries will attend the conference in the coming week.

The U.S. aims to discuss the practical application and responsible use of AI in warfare and international security.

- a senior State Department official told Breaking Defense.

"It's commendable that the State Department continues to advance the debate over the ethical use of AI for military purposes," Mark Montgomery, senior director of the Center for Cyber Technology Innovation, told Fox News.

The specialist noted that this is about information sharing, not policymaking. 1] However, a representative of the U.S. Center for Cyber Technology Innovation also emphasized that "the countries whose military use of AI should concern us the most are not present".
