A recent report published by Newzoo, as indicated, outlined the state of the gaming industry, with the company taking a general look back at 2023 and then looking ahead to the future and what's to come. One outstanding slide talked about the top ten games for each major platform in terms of MAUs in 2023, which in itself revealed some interesting points.
"This data showed that Starfield was the only single-player game to rank in the top 10 games by average MAU in 2023 on PlayStation, Xbox, and PC. It was also the only "new franchise" to take one of the top spots. All other games on this top ten list were multiplayer or co-op games - and amazingly, the average age of these games is more than seven years old," the publication writes.
The Newzoo report made it clear that games with live services continue to dominate everything else in the industry. Across all major platforms, Fortnite had the highest MAU in 2023, followed closely by Call of Duty, Grand Theft Auto and Roblox. Counter-Strike, League of Legends, Rainbow Six Siege, Apex Legends and Rocket League were also specifically mentioned.
Indicated that Starfield was the "standout example" among these lists, which gathered data from thirty-seven markets around the world. "It was the only exclusive single-player game to make the top ten globally, which is likely due to the game's launch as part of Xbox Game Pass in September 2023. It ranked eighth overall, sitting between Rocket League and Apex Legends," the publication said.
