Climate damage caused by Russia during its aggressive war against Ukraine is estimated at more than $11 billion. This is the amount the terrorist country must pay as reparations. This was reported by the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources of Ukraine with reference to the statements of the Deputy Minister of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources Victoria Kyrieieva, UNN reports .
Russia should reimburse Ukraine for this amount as compensation for emissions caused by the war
Details
A study of climate damage caused by Russia's war in Ukraine was presented at the UN COP28 climate conference.
It shows that Russian aggression affects the global climate by emitting significant amounts of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. The total amount of emissions after 18 months of war is estimated at 150 million tons of CO2e. Emissions from hostilities are estimated at 37 million tons of CO2e. Another 22.2 million tons were caused by fires. Their number increased 36 times during the first year of full-scale war compared to the 12 months before the invasion.
However, Lennard de Klerk, the lead author of the study, noted that Ukraine, together with international allies, is already forming an International Compensation Mechanism to hold Russia accountable and finance the reconstruction.
As a reminder,
on December 3, the Ukrainian pavilion officially started working at the UN Climate Change Conference in Dubai.
