Former Ukrainian Interior Minister Vitaliy Zakharchenko has been notified of suspicion of treason for attempting to persuade Ukrainian officials to cooperate with Russia during its full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Former Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine Vitaliy Zakharchenko has been notified of suspicion of high treason because he tried to persuade Ukrainian officials to cooperate with Russia since the beginning of the full-scale invasion. This was reported by UNN with reference to the SBI.

The agency said that immediately after Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the suspect called Ukrainian officials with a proposal to sign an agreement with Russia on so-called "friendship and protection," which meant voluntary surrender of territory to the enemy in exchange for holding "high positions.

At the same time, the traitor emphasized that he was acting on behalf of the Russian leadership.

The SBI also found out that the former minister participated in the creation and publication of a number of videos and digests to create anti-government sentiment in society.

In his speeches, the former official justifies and recognizes the legitimacy of Russia's armed aggression against Ukraine, and glorifies representatives of Russia's armed forces.

The defendant is suspected of actions against the foundations of national security of Ukraine, as well as against peace, security of mankind and international law and order (parts 1, 2 of Article 111, part 3 of Article 436-2 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).The maximum sentence under these articles is 15 years in prison. The investigation will request that the suspect be held in custody as a measure of restraint

The SBI adds that the former official was previously notified of suspicion in the Maidan cases for organizing the commission of a number of serious and especially serious crimes of seizure of state power, abuse of power and official authority, misappropriation, embezzlement and seizure of other people's property on a particularly large scale, premeditated murders, infliction of various degrees of bodily harm, some of which were sent to court.

It is noted that in February 2014, after committing these crimes and realizing the victory of the Revolution of Dignity, the suspect fled to Russia.
