According to media reports, the criminal police in Gelsenkirchen are looking for 69 suspects at once after serious riots last year at the arena of soccer club Schalke. It is noted that this is the largest police operation related to a Bundesliga match in the history of Germany.
Initially, the criminal case was opened against Eintracht ultras, but now the police are also considering the possibility that Schalke fans were involved in the riots. At least 143 suspects have already been identified, and 69 more are to be identified from surveillance cameras.
Context
On May 20, 2023, violent clashes broke out in the match between Schalke 04 and Eintracht immediately after the final whistle. Red Cross volunteers and several police officers were injured in the scuffles. In addition, at least 18 random stadium guests were injured, two of whom were hospitalized and operated on.
According to police, the riots started because Frankfurt fans climbed over the barriers of the visitors' block and attacked Schalke fans.
