Details

Six workers reported missing after the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed in Baltimore on Tuesday are presumed dead.

On Tuesday, March 26, a container ship crashed into and destroyed a major bridge in Baltimore - the accident occurred well before rush hour, when many cars were crossing the bridge. Six people are presumed dead as a result of the accident. Operations at one of America's busiest ports were disrupted.

The U.S. Coast Guard and other authorities conducted search and rescue efforts overnight; those efforts were suspended early Wednesday evening.

Reference

The Francis Scott Key Bridge crosses the Patapsco River and leads into Baltimore Harbor. The bridge opened in 1977 and is named in honor of the author of "The Star-Spangled Banner," the national anthem of the United States.

It is believed that Scott Key was standing near where the bridge was to be built when he witnessed the bombardment of Fort McHenry in 1814 (during the Anglo-American War of 1812-1815), which inspired him to write the U.S. national anthem.

According to the Maryland state government, the Port of Baltimore handled more than 52 million tons of international cargo worth more than $80 billion last year - the ninth largest port among U.S. ports.

Recall

Rescuers have already rescued two people from the water after a two-kilometer bridge collapsed in the US city of Baltimore.

U.S. President Joe Biden called the Baltimore bridge collapse a "terrible accident", promising to do everything possible to get one of the most important U.S. East Coast ports back to normal operations as quickly as possible.
