The Ukrainian Akademik Vernadsky station has changed its annual expeditions: The 28th Ukrainian Antarctic Expedition is heading home after a year of work on the icy continent, and the team of the 29th UAE is taking its place, the National Antarctic Research Center reports, according to UNN.
Details
The participants of the 28th wintering have left the station. In the near future, the Ukrainian icebreaker Noosphere will deliver them, as well as the participants of the seasonal expedition, to Chile. From there, the polar explorers will travel to Ukraine by air and land.
It is reported that the 28th UAE has 14 participants. All year round, they conducted research in the Antarctic in three main areas (meteorology, biology, geophysics) and supported the station's activities. In particular, they monitored the Earth's magnetic field, ionosphere, global thunderstorm activity, ozone layer, weather indicators, Antarctic wildlife, etc.
Importantly, thanks to improved communication and logistics, as well as the use of drones, the expedition was able to significantly expand the geography of field research at sea and conduct more comprehensive observations of birds and mammals.
The 29th UAE, which also has 14 participants, will continue to perform all these tasks. In most studies, continuity is extremely important, because some of the data series at our station are the longest in the Antarctic. It is this kind of data that today allows scientists from all over the world to track how the Antarctic has changed over the past 80 years and make predictions for the future.
