The sale of oysters in Calvados and Gironde has been banned due to norovirus infection associated with sewage and rainwater.

Two French prefectures of Calvados and Gironde have banned the harvesting and sale of oysters from the Arcachon Bay located in the region due to massive poisoning. This is reported by France Bleu, UNN reports.

Details

The oysters were confirmed to have acute intestinal infection with norovirus.

It is noted that the  regional regional committee for shellfish farming in Arcachon has expressed concern about the situation, noting that norovirus is not naturally present in seawater. According to the Committee, the contamination may be due to sewage and rainwater entering the the natural environment.

The French were advised to return the oysters they had already bought oysters back to the stores.
