The ruling party of Prime Minister Fumio Kishida lost ground in the by-election, in which candidates from the Constitutional Democratic Party, Japan's largest opposition party, celebrated victory. This was reported by NHK World, according to UNN.

Details

The day before, extraordinary elections to the lower house of parliament were held in Japan. As of today, it is known that the candidates from the Constitutional Democratic Party, which is the largest opposition party in Japan, are the closest to victory. The likely success is evidenced by the results in three by-elections to the Japanese parliament, held in Shimane (south-west), Nagasaki (south-west) and Tokyo, significantly weakened the position of unpopular Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, who is approaching the end of his term as head of the LDP (Liberal Democratic Party of Japan, - Japanese political party of conservative direction, founded in 1955 - ed).

This will be a strong blow to the Prime Minister

- said Shigenobu Tamura, a former LDP staffer turned political commentator.

The expert added that it will be difficult for the prime minister to run for a second term as party leader if support for his cabinet remains low.

For reference

The by-elections will be held for the first time since the Liberal Democratic Party's fundraising abuses came to light in the second half of 2023. This month, the LDP punished dozens of party politicians who received bribes for selling tickets to fundraising events and failed to report the funds received.

Recall

In North Macedonia , presidential electionshave begun, with seven candidates running. It is expected that none of the candidates will overcome the 50 percent threshold in the first round, so the second round will tentatively take place on May 8.

Turkey's main opposition party , the CHP, has won major victories in Istanbul and Ankara, dealing a significant blow to President Erdogan's ruling AKP party in local elections.
