Former President of the European Commission Jacques Delors, who is called the architect of the modern EU, has died at the age of 98. This is reported by the BBC with reference to information from relatives, reports UNN.

Jacques Delors helped create the single market, which allowing the free movement of people, goods and services within the EU.

He served from 1985 to 1995, Delors also laid the groundwork for the single European currency, the euro.

Daughter Delora Martin Aubry said that he died in his sleep Wednesday morning at his Paris home.

French President Emmanuel Macron has named Delors, who also served as France's finance minister in 1981-84, "a statesman with a French destiny" and "an inexhaustible master of our Europe".

 said Emmanuel Macron.

Delors served as president of the European Commission for three Commission for three terms - longer than anyone else.

Ursula von der Leyen, who currently holds the post, said. said he was "a visionary who made our Europe stronger".
