Director of Wicked: The Enchantress explains the purpose of dividing the musical into 2 parts

"Wicked: The Enchantress" covers only the first act of the musical, the movie itself seems complete thanks to its dynamic pacing and ending. John M. Chu explained that this is one of the key decisions that made the movie possible in the first place.

When asked about the decision to split Wicked into two films, John M. Chu said the following:

I had to come in and say: "We have to make a choice with this." You can't make a good one or two movies by dancing back and forth. Make two movies right now, otherwise we will never make these two movies good. And once you make that commitment, you can take this thing apart and find what we need.

In fact, it was about stepping back from Defying Gravity, Chu explained.

We found that the perspective of the movie had to be different from the series. In the show, Galinda goes down on her bubble, and she is actually the host of the evening. It's a kind of vaudeville. She draws you into the story.

 John M. Chu explained that it's important for the audience to accept the world you're building in the first 10 minutes of a movie.
