IAEA staff continue their monitoring mission at the Zaporizhzhia NPP, which is controlled by Russian forces. The mission, which has been operating since September 2022, assesses the radiation and chemical safety of the plant.

Today, the staff of the IAEA permanent monitoring mission at the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant, which is temporarily occupied by Russian troops, was rotated. This was reported by the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, UNN reports .

Details

The IAEA permanent mission has been operating at the temporarily occupied Zaporizhzhia NPP in Enerhodar since September 2022. However, permanent monitoring missions started their activities in January 2023.

IAEA experts monitor the radiation, chemical and other components of the nuclear power plant.

To ensure security during the change of units involved in the monitoring mission at the nuclear power plant itself, the Ukrainian military is involved.

The Ukrainian military is probably entrusted with one of the most difficult missions. This is to ensure the security component, namely to ensure a ceasefire on the line of contact, to carry out demining, if necessary, and to ensure the unimpeded transition of IAEA specialists to our temporarily occupied land

- commented Oleksandr Savenko, head of the CIA department of the Tavria military unit.
