Today, Ukrainians honor the liquidators of the Chornobyl accident. They remember both the tragedy of April 26, 1986, and the more than 600,000 people who eliminated the consequences of the largest man-made disaster.

Today, on December 14, all Ukrainians honor the liquidators of the of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant accident. The event was initiated by a presidential decree in 2006, UNN reports.

The tragic night of April 26

The largest man-made disaster in human history occurred on April 26, 1986. At about half past two in the morning, during an experiment, unprofessional actions of the station personnel and design features of the two powerful explosions occurred during the experiment. They completely destroyed the reactor of the fourth power unit.

The explosion also damaged the walls and ceilings of the turbine hall, a fire broke out inside the plant and on the roof.

Among the first responders, 31 people died within within a few weeks after the accident. 134 employees of the Chornobyl nuclear power plant received radiation sickness.

The Soviet authorities tried to hide the scale of the disaster. The public was informed about the the event without details was reported to the population only on April 28.

Consequences of the Chernobyl accident
