On Tuesday, April 9, Moldova's ruling party Action and Solidarity (PAS) appealed to the Constitutional Court to obtain approval for a constitutional referendum on Moldova's accession to the EU. This was stated by the head of the parliamentary legal commission Veronica Rosca, reports Newsmaker, UNN.
Details
She said that PAS is asking the Constitutional Court to initiate a republican referendum on the revision of the constitution to include provisions on European integration.
The Constitutional Court has to give its opinion on this proposal... Then we have to submit to the parliament a draft law that sets the date of the constitutional referendum and the question that citizens should answer during the referendum: "Do you support Moldova's accession to the EU?
Addendum
Earlier, on April 8, the Moldovan parliament held consultations on introducing a provision to the country's constitution stating that integration into the EU is a strategic goal.
In particular, deputies propose to supplement the document with the following proposals: "reaffirming the European identity of the people of Moldova, proclaiming integration into the European Union as a strategic goal of Moldova".
After accession to these treaties, the provisions of EU legal acts will take precedence over the provisions of national laws that do not comply with them.
Recall
The initiative to hold a referendum came from President Maia Sandu. She believes that a general poll could be held in the fall of 2024.
