In 2022, the number of currency counterfeits in Ukraine decreased threefold, with the old-style 200 and 500 hryvnia notes being the most counterfeited. The counterfeits mostly had fake UV protection and were often in retail circulation.

In 2023, the vast majority of counterfeit national currency banknotes in Ukraine were in the form of 200 UAH notes of 2007 and 500 UAH notes of 2006. The press service of the National Bank of Ukraine reported this to a journalist of UNN.

Details

The NBU reported that it constantly monitors the state of withdrawal of counterfeit money from circulation and can state a low level of counterfeiting of national currency banknotes.

The level of counterfeiting of national currency banknotes decreased more than three times in 2022. This is evidenced by the monitoring of the withdrawal of national currency banknotes from circulation in Ukraine in 2022

- the NBU reported.

Thus, the National Bank noted that at the end of last year, about 2.2 pieces of counterfeit hryvnia banknotes accounted for 1 million pieces of genuine hryvnia banknotes (at the end of 2021 - about 7.1 pieces).

For comparison, according to the European Central Bank, this figure in the European Union in 2022 was almost six times higher and amounted to about 13 euro banknotes (12 in 2021).

"In 2023, as well as last year, old-style hryvnia banknotes were most often counterfeited, accounting for 83% of all counterfeits withdrawn from circulation. The overwhelming majority of counterfeit national currency banknotes were in the form of the 200 hryvnia notes of 2007 and 500 hryvnia notes of 2006. That is, the most counterfeited banknotes are high denominations of the old design, which have a lower level of protection against counterfeiting compared to the new design," the National Bank said.

In addition, the NBU reported that most of the counterfeit national currency banknotes withdrawn from circulation had imitation ultraviolet protection and were sold through retail outlets, and were designed to target the inattention of cashiers, who mostly check only the ultraviolet protection.

The NBU added that in order to counteract the sale of counterfeits, the NBU regularly conducts training seminars/webinars for cashiers of banks, collection companies, retailers, etc.
