What does the new law on mobilization provide for: explanation of the Ministry of Defense

The new law on mobilization and military training introduces basic military training at universities starting in 2025, conscript service lasting 5 months in peacetime and 3 months in wartime instead of regular service, mobilization from 25 to 60 years of age, and deferment of military service until the age of military service for citizens from 18 years of age.

The Ministry of Defense has clarified what the new law on mobilization and military training provides for. This is reported by UNN, with reference  to the press service of the defense ministry.

Details

Draft law No. 10449 on mobilization and military training, which is currently at the final stage of consideration of amendments in the Verkhovna Rada Committee on National Security, Defense and Intelligence, should introduce the following changes at the legislative level:

  • Mobilization is proposed from the age of 25 to 60 *Basic military training will be introduced in higher education institutions starting in 2025.
  • Certain categories of citizens are exempt from basic military training at universities 
  • Instead of conscription, basic military service is introduced for 5 months in peacetime and 3 months in wartime  
  • Citizens from the age of 18 can choose the time of basic military service 
  • Citizens from the age of 18, regardless of basic military training or service, will receive a deferral until they reach mobilization age

The Verkhovna Rada voted in favor of government draft law No. 10449, which provides for changes to the legislation on mobilization, in the first reading on February 7. The parliament emphasized that the draft law would be amended by the second reading. In particular, the mono-majority indicatedthat compromises would be sought before the second reading on the postponement of military service for graduate students, the seizure of accounts, etc.

The day before, MP Oleksiy Honcharenko reported that the parliamentary committee on national security, defense and intelligence, while working on the draft law on mobilization, rejected an amendment regarding mobilization from the age of 18
