YouTube is introducing new rules requiring content creators to label realistic videos created using artificial intelligence to increase transparency and build trust with viewers.

YouTube is introducing a new tool in Creator Studio that will require content creators to label realistic videos created using artificial intelligence, according to a YouTube blog, UNN reports.

"Generative AI is changing the way creators express themselves, from storyboarding ideas to experimenting with tools that enhance the creative process. But viewers increasingly want more transparency about whether the content they see is modified or synthetic. That's why we're introducing a new tool in Creator Studio that requires creators to let viewers know when realistic content is created using AI," YouTube writes.

These messages will be displayed as markings (labels) in the extended video description or on the front panel of the video player.

"We do not require creators to disclose information about content that is obviously unrealistic, animated, contains special effects, or uses generative AI to assist in creation," YouTube explained.

The new feature aims to increase transparency for viewers and build trust between creators and their audiences, the company says.

YouTube cites several examples where artificial intelligence (AI) labeling is necessary, such as replacing one person's face with another, synthetic voice generation, altering footage of real events, and others. Additionally, YouTube is working on an updated privacy process to allow users to request the removal of content created by AI or other means that mimics real people in face or voice.

The EU has adopted the world's first comprehensive law regulating artificial intelligence, including restrictions on real-time biometric surveillance in public places and transparency and compliance requirements for high-risk artificial intelligence systems.
