Details

Doctors in Sweden are trying to save and restore the function of the limbs of Ukrainian soldiers who were injured during the war with russia.

With the help of complex procedures, the medical staff at Karolinska University Hospital in Stockholm is trying to help the wounded avoid amputation and return to health.

We had to amputate only in a few cases

- said Gunnar Sandersjo, a trauma surgeon at the Carolina University Hospital Trauma Department.

To save the limb, doctors use standard methods such as bone transplantation and lengthening. However, to achieve the best result, they sometimes have to work at the limit of medical possibility. Therefore, doctors can lengthen a segment of bone by one millimeter every day until the required length, direction and rotation are achieved, which usually takes three to six months.

This war has led to a change in the approach to surgical treatment, as most injuries are related to artillery shells and mines, often requiring complex surgical interventions.
